Halloween, Part III: Mermaid

There were moments in this costume making process where I questioned my judgment.  I mean really?  When I was purchasing this green shiny fabric with only a vague idea of what I was going to do with it, I had some doubts.  But the costume fabric is really cheap this time of year, so I went ahead.  That night, I started on a mermaid tail after Scout was in bed and before I had taken the appropriate measurements.  Let's just say that I ended up making the tail twice.  Somehow, she's kind of a long baby, which is amazing considering her maternal genes.  I'm sure it will level off soon.

Now, I had every intention of sewing a seashell bikini top onto a onesie.  But I questioned it, and ultimately decided to abort the plan and instead use a plain pink top.  I'm still not sure if it would have been cute or tasteless or just cheesy.  You can decide.

1 yard shiny, scaly green fabric (I probably could have gotten away with 1/2 yard if I hadn't had a do over)
1 small piece of felt (to provide structure to the tail)
1/2 yard 1/4 inch elastic
Pink onesie
Green sparkly headband

I drew the pattern on newsprint and just sort of eyeballed it.  I cut the pieces and then sewed them together (along with the felt in the end) and then made a casing for the elastic.  I'd share my pattern, but I'm not sure how to do it just yet.

She was very confused by this one, and had this look that seemed to say, "Where did my legs go?"
