On blogging...

When I first started blogging, I didn't tell anyone about my blog.  It felt self-indulgent and I was more comfortable with random strangers who might come upon it than I was putting myself out there to my friends and family.  But slowly, people found it, and I became less crazy about telling people about it.

Lately I've been wondering why I don't have more readers, more followers, more commenters.  And then the obvious dawned on me: you can't blog on an island.  I mean you can, and that's totally valid, but you can't, like I was, blog on an island and then be surprised when you don't have readers, commenters, etc.  So in the last few weeks I've made an effort to change my blogging behaviors in the following ways:
  • A subtle redesign of the blog and purchase of a domain.  This did cause me to take a hit, because I had started establishing a decent page rank on the blogspot domain.
  • I'm actually commenting on the blogs that I read and leaving a link to my blog.
  • I'm actively participating in some of the forums where I was previously only lurking.
  • I'm trying to improve my writing.  I need to be more concise, and not use 30 words to say what I could in 10.
  • I've joined a couple of blog communities.
  • I'm trying to post more.  I'm setting a goal of 3 days a week and trying to establish some kind of schedule.  The only way writing improves is through lots of practice and even more editing.
These things are working, and I've learned a lot.  My page hits are up and I've discovered some new blogs in the process.  One of those blogs, c.w. frosting, was holding a contest for custom designed social media icons.  And I actually won.  See those little buttons on the top right.  They link up to my other little pieces of the interwebs.  I think they are lovely.  Admittedly, my Twitter and Facebook is still rough, but I'm working on them in my spare moments between 8:30 p.m. and bedtime.

Suggestions and constructive criticism are always welcome, though it may be ignored.

I'm a long time lurker and only previously commented on your rainbow cupcakes (which were awesome by the way)! Just wanted to say congrats on all your blog outreach activities. I've got two children and work full time and have been shocked by how much time blogging can take -- especially if you take the "non-island" approach. Congrats too on Scout, she's beautiful. (Sorry, I should have commented on her birth earlier.) Loved the taggie blankets too -- you inspired me to make two for friends. Have a great day! Love your blog!

I too am a long time lurker - though I think I posted a comment back in April 2010 on some cute baby hats you had knitted. I do love your blog - especially all your crafty projects and the adorable pics of your daughter. I love you new re-design as well.
Not sure if you saw the Blue Ribbon Blogger Awards contest sponsored by Country Living. Check it out here http://www.countryliving.com/contribute/crafts/blogger-awards-submission.
I'd love to nominate you but wanted to run it by your first.
In any case I look forward to reading more of your adventures in crafting, motherhood and life in general.

I enjoyed reading your comments. I think everyone blogs on an island for a bit.

It's hard to figure out how to branch out to the right crowd. You might like to read what I wrote about blogging after a year of it, HERE.

Also curious about the blue ribbon award... I always learn a lot from reading other ppl's comments (Thanks Nora)!

I think your blog is awesome and the best way I keep up with what's happening with you all - although I recognize that family members aren't exactly your target audience when seeking wider exposure. But for what it's worth, you inspired me to start a blog of my own, and as evidence of our like minds (or familial DNA, don't know which), I have had the blog for a month and have given the address to exactly... no one.

Spill it Abby. What's the address?
