I missed posting for Week 35 last Friday or Saturday. I had this incredibly clever post about the good, the bad, and the ugly planned, but didn't get pictures taken and then just moved on. And then it was a very busy (in the best possible way) weekend. My sisters (along with a location provided by my mom) threw me a really nice baby shower last Saturday. I'll be honest when I say that I was on the fence about a baby shower because I've been to them before that are sort of awkward. But it was very nice and mellow. Snacks, an adorable cake, cute decorations, family and friends, and thoughtful gifts. They even threw in a couple of games, despite my protests, but I am happy to report that the games did not include melted candy bars in diapers.
It's rather difficult to take pictures at your own party, so I don't have a lot of pictures to share. Perhaps my sisters took more that I can borrow at some point. There are a few more pictures on Flickr where I've very carefully hidden myself behind tiered cake stands.
My younger sister made a diaper cake. But my 9 year old niece added an explanatory note to the top, which I found hysterical.
The cake matched the invitation exactly, and was really tasty as well (and made by the same lady who made my wedding cake). Later in the day the table was full of finger foods, which is honestly my favorite kind of food. (Seriously. I often ask Rykert if we can have a meal of only appetizers and dips. We've done it.)
One tried and true game required everyone to cut a piece of yarn to guess how big around I am. I suppose some people would be offended by this, but I will admit to really not caring. I'm growing a human in there, I'm supposed to be big. The other "game" involved guessing the baby's name, weight, length, and date of birth.
My favorite guesses came from the little girls. 5 pounds 8 ounces and 23 inches long? 6 pounds and 5 ounces and 13 inches long? I guess my sister will monitor the board when the day comes, and the person who guessed the most correct will be sent a fabulous prize. The baby is still nameless (though we have a few contenders), but I will say that our top contenders were not guessed by anyone. But oddly, and this is a clue to those in attendance, one of our very top contenders was mentioned by a party-goer, but was not guessed.
The other party game, which added a bit of unplanned excitement, was a woman in early labor (who wasn't me). I'm happy to report that the baby eventually arrived today, so congratulations to my cousin and his wife!
