What I've been working on...

When I first started knitting, my sole impetus was that I wanted to knit baby hats. Which explains why I went from a narrow swatch of garter stitch to size 4 double points and Peaches 'n Cream cotton (my fingers hurt just thinking of that now). I love knitting baby hats. They're small, portable, and nearly instant gratification.

As I was looking around my house a couple of weeks ago, I noticed the obvious: I have a lot of yarn. Too much. So I started knitting baby hats for my expectant co-workers and then just forgot to stop thereby a plan was hatched. I considering opening a (very) small online storefront, likely on Etsy. It's still in its earliest stages, so don't hold me to it. Of course, to make items for sale I have to also create unique patterns, which offers its own challenges. So for the most part, they'll be simple roll brim style hats in funky colors with fun embellishments and gift-able packaging. There may also be a pattern or two as well (I have a sweater pattern that is nearly completed.)

I have no notion that I'll be quitting my day job or that it will even fully supplement my crafting addictions. It's a seemingly saturated market, and my dedication to the project will be limited by the fact that I have a pesky full-time job and other interests. Instead, I'm just going to do this for fun, but track it like a business because I fear the tax man. For now, I'm working on creating some "stock" and getting the other this-and-thats put together on the back end. I also need to figure out some kind of pricing structure. In my opinion, many Etsy sellers significantly undervalue their work which has a deleterious impact on all Etsy sellers particularly those that rely on it for their full-time income. So even if I don't intend to make any significant money from the endeavor (which I really don't), I think it's important to price competitively for the sake of the greater good. Any advice or comments are much appreciated...

And frankly, if and when it ceases being enjoyable, I'll just stop.

Yea! I have been waiting for you to have things for sale! Will you consider doing older kids' scarves, hats, mittens, and the like? Rollneck sweaters? How many times I have invented something in my head and thought, ooo, I bet Libby could do that... How's the crocheting coming? I have an idea for you that looks REEAAAALLY simple...
