Getting Organized.

I had a relaxing weekend, though I'm tired now that the work week is in full swing. This will be a short week at work, but what that really means is that I have to put in extra hours to prepare to be out for a couple of days. But the weekend... On Saturday morning, I went to one of the dorms on campus to teach knitting lessons. The University of Iowa is sponsoring a program called Saturdays in Service (I think that's what it's called). I don't know all the details of the project, but know they were sending students all over to participate in various community service activities. The Preemie Project was participating by teaching students to knit basic baby hats. While it was again painfully clear that I did not miss my calling by not becoming a teacher, I was impressed at (a) the turnout of students who spend part of their Saturday learning to knit and (b) how quickly the vast majority of them picked it up. I'm glad I participated, and was sorry that I wasn't able to stay for the afternoon session.

I'm on a bit of a slow organization kick. I'm trying to purge my craft room (and our house in general) of all things that are not useful.

As the neglected projects came off the needles the past couple of weeks, my messy nest of circular and double pointed needles continued to grow more cumbersome. I've tried various solutions to this in the past, but have yet to find an organized solution. But here's my latest attempt:

DIY Needle Case

I purchased 3 hole punched pencil cases on super clearance in the school supply aisle at Target. I used binder rings to hold them together, and then organized the circulars and DPNs together by size.

I still need to label each case with the appropriate size. And it has yet to prove how well the cases (specifically the zipper openings) will hold out, but for now I like the solution. And it was cheap.

It has led to some odd observations like why do I have 7 size US 8 DPNS. They come in sets of 4 or 5. Clearly there will be more needles uncovered from the recesses of the couch and craft room.

I'm a mirco-organizer. I like to organize small projects and groups of things, but often miss the forest and overall things are still a mess.

and my button box.

But I won't pan out to show you the rest of the messy room.

At least you organize some things! I am horrible at that. Or I will go crazy and do it all at once, get it all pretty - and then not maintain it. It's an ongoing battle. In other news, I was talking to my friend the other day about my hobbies and she is going to teach me to knit! The first thing I'm going to learn is a baby's hat :)
