Last weekend, as soon as we returned from my parents, I started hauling our Christmas decorations out. I don't go overboard, and our tree has far more lights than ornaments (I think 1200+ lights on a 7 foot tree sounds about right). At any rate, we only have a few decorations here and there.

My grandma (on my dad's side) has a collection of nativity scenes that she gets out every year. They are a diverse bunch collected over the years from all over - travels, friends, rescued from Goodwill, etc. I've always liked a certain small, wooden scene. She doesn't exactly remember where it came from, but thinks that either my dad or one of his brothers brought it home from Sunday school. I think that's what she said, but if not, I'm adopting it as the story anyway. At any rate, last year she gave it to me. I had completely forgotten about it until I brought the decorations out last weekend.

Shown here on my kitchen table for photo purposes. It usually sits on our mantle.

And with that, I give you a Meme that's been making the rounds via email and I've seen on other blogs...
  1. Wrapping paper or gift bags? Wrapping paper. I love to wrap. But for an odd shaped gift, I may still use a gift bag or two (and always reuse them unless they're damaged).
  2. Real tree or Artificial? Artificial.
  3. When do you put up the tree? As soon after Thanksgiving as I can.
  4. When do you take the tree down? Sometime in early January.
  5. Do you like eggnog? No, not at all; not even spiked.
  6. Favorite gift received as a child? I really don't know, and while I received lots of nice gifts every year of my life, I can't think of one that stands out above the rest. Maybe a Cabbage Patch Kid the Christmas riots were breaking out over them.
  7. Hardest person to buy for? I fret over gift giving. It has nothing to do with money, but I really want to find the perfect gift for everyone on my list. Something they will love and wonder how they ever lived without. See, I set my standards too high, and can rarely meet them.
  8. Easiest person to buy for? Probably Anna and Grace. Have you ever watched the Disney Channel or Nick with a 7 year old - it's like watching effective child marketing in action.
  9. Do you have a nativity scene? One, see above.
  10. Mail or email Christmas cards? Well, I'd love to mail them, but rarely get around to it. Really, email Christmas cards? Seriously.
  11. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? Answering this could get me in trouble. But in reality, I really can't think of anything. I think my parents would say that the worst Christmas gift I ever received was a puppy. Long story.
  12. Favorite Christmas Movie? Easy. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (with the Charlie Brown Christmas Special coming in closely behind - even if it isn't exactly a "movie"). But a Christmas cannot pass without watching The Christmas Story at least once.
  13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? November or December. In the perfect world I'd pick things up throughout the year as I spot the perfect gift.
  14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? No, not a Christmas present. Wedding gifts were another story.
  15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? English Toffee.
  16. Lights on the tree? Yes. Lots. Multi-colored. (Do some people not put lights on their tree?) And for the record, I saw on MythBusters that it is unlikely that the lights alone would cause a fire.
  17. Favorite Christmas song? I'm not sure I have a favorite song, but I have favorite versions of songs: Baby Please Come Home by U2, Mary's Boy Child, Santa Clause is Coming to Town by Bruce Sprinsteen, Happy Xmas (War is Over). And frankly, nothing says the holidays like a little Neil Diamond.
  18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? Travel either 2 hours to my parents or down to Louisiana.
  19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? I think so, but probably not.
  20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Actually, it's a vintage looking glass Santa.
  21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? Usually on Christmas morning, but when we were kids we got to open one on Christmas Eve.
  22. Most annoying thing about this time of the year? That WHAM! Christmas song on the radio.
  23. Favorite ornament theme or color? Eclectic.
  24. Favorite for Christmas dinner? Not sure.
  25. What do you want for Christmas this year? A speedy economic recovery for all. And world peace. And, if Santa stops at the Home Depot, a new toilet. Unfortunately, I'm absolutely serious about the last item.
