An Open Letter to My Family

Dear Family,

You know how every year I try really hard to complete handknit gifts for as many of you as I can? Well, I don't think I'm going to do that this year. It's not that I don't enjoy making things for you. Nor do I doubt that you honestly like and appreciate the items I've given you in years past. I know that you all do. The thing is - how many pairs of mittens and scarves and hats can you all use anyway? And I usually fall on my face trying to make the hard 25th deadline. Remember Rykert's scarf he requested for Christmas in 2004 and finally received in August 2005?

So here's the deal, dear family, if you would like a handknit gift this year let me know and I'll do my best to make it happen. If you have a specific request for a felted bag, felted slippers, gloves, mittens, a hat, a scarf, etc, then let me know. I'm happy to do it. I enjoy knitting for others more than I do for myself. I really do. But keep in mind that you handknit may not arrive first thing on Christmas morning.

There are a few exceptions where gifts are already in the works:
  1. My nieces will get new hats. I noticed this weekend that last year's were getting a little rough around the edges.
  2. Rykert has already requested a pair of felted slippers and a new hat. (it's hard to keep these a secret anyway because he'll see me knitting and has gotten pretty good at picking up on the knitting lingo and the process.)
  3. My grandparents will each get something yet to be determined.

So what do you think. I just don't want to saddle you all with carefully crafted gifts that you will never use.

Love to you all,

L

P.S. I'd love to knit you each a sweater or a king sized afghan, but there just aren't enough hours in the day. I've got student loans to pay and groceries to buy.

Oh my, a Christmas without a knitted gift? - I, for one, am not going to stand for it. I have a new pink (light) coat that needs a nice light, fluffy scarf, and if it sparkled, even better. I absolutely love getting knitted or any handmade gifts, so there's a hint for ya. Love, Mom

Hats will be great for the girls. BUT you are forbidden from getting them anything else!!!! Grace's new coat is purple and Anna's is blue--like a Tiffany blue. Seriously. NOTHING ELSE!

Mom's kind of pushy isn't she?
