Pictures.

So, I hobbled around the Iowa State Fair last weekend with Rykert and my parents. (Note, the hobbly, wobbly walking seems to have ended, as has the pain in my foot, but rest continues until Monday at the earliest). Anyway, my camera, as it always tends to do in the most annoying places, decided to crap out. The fact that Rykert and I stood in Target before heading out of town discussing whether or not we needed a new battery, just adds to the frusturation. I did manage a few pictures before it died... Iowans among you will notice that the camera did not make it out of the Agriculture Building.
Here's what we saw:
A cow sculpted out of butter, Is it just me, or does the new butter cow lady not seem to have it? I mean, it just wasn't as well sculpted as when the original butter cow lady was doing her thing.)
buttercow
Sorry for chopping your head off Mr. Butter Cow.

A butter Superman,
butterman
I believe the words, "You've got to be kidding me," were uttered. And then I had flashbacks of that ridiculously bad new movie.

Some lovely dahlias,
dahlias

Lots of vegetables, some prize-winning,
veggies

The Great Pumpkin,
huge pumpkin
This monstrosity weighed in at like 970 pounds.

And here is what I purchased, other than some fried food,
sf cookbook
My biannual treat, a cookbook full of prize winning recipes from every category imaginable, and a "Share a Sheep" pin from the Heifer International booth.

My camera died before we made it the barns and the knitting exhibits. But while looking at the knitting entries, my mom pointed to a felted Kureyon bag. I then went straight to the yarn store in Des Moines to pick out the yarn. That's what she will be getting for Christmas. I'm thinking it should have leather straps.

I agree with you about the new butter cow lady. I hear she studied with the original, but I think she has a ways to go. The butter cow this year lacked the definition and seemed awefully scrawny to me.

Awwww. Your photos make me feel nostalgic for Iowa! The veggies are my favorite. I have a slew of veggie photos from the fair last year. And thanks for sharing a photo of the biggest pumpkin instead of the biggest pig. Yuck. Did you milk a cow?

Wow, I didn't feel like standing in line for the Butter Cow (having seen it before, including last year). The photos show she's got a long way to go. Oy. I miss the former sculptor already. :(

I can't figure out the pumpkin picture. Is it showing up the way it's supposed to?

The county fair is a big deal around here. Haven't been in years, but maybe I should check it out. Looks like fun.

I was at the State Fair on Saturday! My first time seeing the butter cow and eating a fried Snickers! All in all, a great time!

I just wanted to thank you for commenting on my blog! I read your's a lot but I'm mostly a lurker and don't comment often! Looks like you had a good time at the state fair.

That cow looks a little on the scrawny side. And Superman? Why? I don't get it. I missed the Farm Fair this year - maybe next year! Looks like you had a good time, though!

Ah the fair... one more thing to add to the list of "things in Iowa I didn't realize I would miss". No fried candy bars for us this year. (Although that's probably a good thing!)
